Facebook pages are excellent forums for groups of like minded people to join, consume and help to create information. Once a list of members likes the page they will be able to stay up to date on the latest news on online course offerings, and also have the opportunity to discuss the problems that individuals are having with online learning.
This may seem to be an overgeneralized response, but new information and problems that individuals are experiencing while learning online can become quite specific. This information could be used to assist course platforms with valuable feedback that can help to make their products better for all learners.
For my audience of adults lacking basic skills to learn online, and at this point, I do not see the need for private pages, other than private messages which are readily available on the page. Facebook pages become successful because they provide information on services to groups of interested individuals. By keeping my page fresh and updated I hope to be able to maintain a social presence.
As for Facebook page maintenance, social media ensures that the site will be maintained by me and structured and developed by others who share in the same space. It would be impossible for me to close an environment such as Facebook and this is what makes it such a powerful tool; it becomes collective knowledge that is shared and responded to by others.
It is amazing to realize that within a few weeks I have joined a virtual world full of educational implications, and have created a website for my audience of adult learners, and also a Youtube video and Facebook page to further the cause. To say that I have learned far more than I expected is a gross understatement. In the future, I would like to find new ways of using the spaces that I have created to provide efficient and easy to access to resources for adult learners.
